Getting our (nonprofit) board members on board with OnBoard

Nicky Ducommun

I'd love to get some suggestions for usage hints, puzzles, treasure hunts...whatever... to get our board members to log in to OnBoard and poke around in there. We do plan to make OnBoard the only way to access the board book, but will plan to continue to send it out via email as a PDF until we can get people going. (And one of our youngest board members insists on having a paper copy!)

We cannot issue everyone iPad (we are a small nonprofit). We are in Seattle and everyone is pretty wired anyway, but almost no one brings their laptops to board meetings.

Any suggestions?

    Hi Nicky!

It is great that you are moving to a business practice where OnBoard is the only way to access the board book. You will likely find that as long as you give your members another option, they may not be motivated to change their ways. Here are some things you may want to consider:

    • Send out a notice via email with advance notice of when you will stop providing the board book via PDF (then stick to it).
    • Offer walk-in sessions or virtual training options with a specific agenda (how to login via browser and mobile app, navigating the main menu, accessing a meeting and opening the book, using the annotation tools). Make it mandatory that they have their device for the session.
    • Send out links to the overview video (3 minutes) and director reference.
    • At your next meeting, pair an early adopter of OnBoard with someone who needs some additional help, or you may want to ask one of your advocates to share a quick demo or make a few remarks about how easy they are finding OnBoard to use.
    • Post important updates, articles, and events in the Announcements section of OnBoard to encourage members to login and review those items. Do not send the same information over email.

Please let me know what you end up trying and how it works out!
